India's manufacturing sector expansion slows in March: PMI

Strong Canadian manufacturing growth maintained in March

The UK manufacturing sector maintained a steady growth in March, survey results from IHS Markit showed Tuesday.

In March, Canada's PMI came in at 55.7, up nominally from February's 55.6.

"The market group breakdown revealed manufacturers operating in consumption and intermediate market groups signaled no appetite for recruitment", Aashna Dodhia, Economist at IHS Markit, said.

According to the report, the rise in output was mainly linked to higher new orders.

"Input cost inflation consequently hit the highest since 2012".

Although the PMI is positive, it's the lowest in a year; in the last quarter of 2017 the PMI surged by 1,3%. At the same time, the increase in the number of new orders is the lowest in the last 20 months since mid-2016, with the increase in export orders remaining stable.

Economic activity in the nation's manufacturing sector remained solid during March, while construction spending was almost unchanged in February.

"The latest PMI survey provided further evidence that United Kingdom manufacturing has entered a softer growth phase so far this year", said Rob Dobson, director at data company IHS Markit.

However, it held above the 50-point threshold that separates growth from contraction for the eighth straight month. There was some pressure on supply chains as average lead times continued to lengthen during March (the third month in a row).

Affin Hwang Investment Bank Bhd chief economist Alan Tan said Malaysia's manufacturing growth remains to be in the range of 5% in the first half of 2018 (1H18) supported by the robust economic growth, compared with 6% in 2017.

While the US economy ended 2017 on fairly high note, MarketWatch noted it may have gotten off to a softer start in 2018.

In line with the picture for output and new orders, purchasing activity rose at a weaker pace during March.

In Turkey, manufacturing output and new orders have increased, and so have cost burdens. Manufacturers scaled up their purchasing activity in March, though at a slower pace than in February.

The PMI for Turkey in March, however, fell to 51.8 from 55.6 in February.
