Intel will not provide Spectre/Meltdown microcode updates for some processor families

Haifa team sires Intel's 'best processor ever' for laptops

In an update to the mitigation guide, the company said it has stopped working on Spectre Variant 2 mitigation for some processor series because fixes are either impractical or the processors are no longer widely supported. In an update to its Microcode Update Guidance (via ZDNet), Intel has changed the patch status of several CPU families to "stopped".

The reasoning for not patching the vulnerability were claimed to include microarchitectural characteristics that preclude a practical implementation of features mitigating Variant 2; limited Commercially Available System Software support; and based on customer inputs, most of these products are implemented as "closed systems" and therefore are expected to have a lower likelihood of exposure to these vulnerabilities.

The chips also bears the all new Intel Core i5+, i7+ and i9+ badges that will go on to support Intel Optane memory tech, allowing you to use the cheap Optane RAM so as to speed up the traditional hard drives for faster boot times, app launches and other such similar to the speed boost, that you get when you use the SSD instead of HDD.

The decision's a bummer, but not really a surprise. Intel's first ever Core i9 laptop processor was just unveiled, and with the company positioning it toward content creators, it too should help push the envelope all the more.

The fact that the chips not being patched are old is also said to be key to Intel's thinking, since it's unlikely the affected chips are used in high-security environments. It was more of a shock when Intel originally revealed its intention to create patches for decade-old chips, especially since the firmware updates get delivered via motherboard BIOS updates not from Intel directly. Firmware updates are just part of the equation with the far-reaching CPU exploits, though.
