Woman's Ancestry.com DNA test shows real dad is mom's doctor

Woman takes DNA test and discovers fertility doctor used his sperm to impregnate her mum

But in July 2017, Ashby and Fowler's daughter Kelli Rowlette "received a notification on Ancestry.com that a DNA sample she had submitted matched with Dr. Mortimer's DNA sample", according to the complaint. It was her birth certificate, and according to the lawsuit, she noticed a familiar name signed on it: "Dr. Mortimer". That is, until she informed her parents, who remembered the doctor, according to the Daily Beast.

The lawsuit states that the family has been "suffering immeasurably" since receiving the DNA results.

The Washington state family is suing Dr Mortimer and the Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates of Idaho Falls for medical negligence, fraud, battery, negligent infliction of emotional distress, and breach of contract.

Consequently, the couple chose to be artificially inseminated using sperm from both her husband (85 percent) and a donor (15 percent), who was requested to be a university student with fairly specific physical characteristics. "Dr. Mortimer knew Kelli Rowlette was his biological daughter but did not disclose this to Ms. Ashby or Mr. Fowler".

Gizmodo notes that, upon receipt of the results of the ancestry test, Ms Rowlette was baffled by the inclusion of Gerald Mortimer, but she didn't know who he was right off the bat.

But the lawsuit claims that when Mortimer performed the procedure in summer 1980, he used his own sperm. The service not only connected her genetically to a man she had never heard of, named Gerald Mortimer, it told her that Mortimer was her father. It's unclear how this affects fertility, though.

In the United States, about 6% of married women ages 15 to 44 are unable to get pregnant after a year of trying.

Websites like Ancestry.com and 23andMe purport to give people insight into where they and their families came from through DNA testing.

But after speaking with her parents, details eventually began piecing themselves together, according to the lawsuit. "We are committed to delivering the most accurate results, however with this, people may learn of unexpected connections", the statement read. "Anyone who takes a test can change their DNA matching settings at any time, meaning that if they opt out, their profile and relationship will not be visible to other customers". He was sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay $116,805 in fines and restitution.

Millions have used Ancestry.com to trace the roots of their family tree, but for Kelli Rowlette it led to the stunning discovery that her biological father is actually her parents' fertility doctor.
