Fourteen killed as truck plows into bus carrying Canadian hockey team

Canadian junior hockey team bus involved in serious crash report says

Canadians were moved to tears on Saturday as they learned of the identities of the deceased on the bus that was driving the Humboldt Broncos hockey team to a crucial playoff game Friday against the Nipawin Hawks.

In a horrific accident, 14 people were killed as a Canadian junior hockey team traveled to a a playoff game on Friday. Fourteen of them were killed, including the driver, and the other 14 had been taken to hospital, three of them in critical condition.

The Saskatchewan league is a feeder system for higher levels of hockey, with many graduating to play at USA and Canadian colleges and major junior league level, while some go on to the National Hockey League (NHL).

Michelle Straschnitzki, who lives in Airdrie, Alberta, said her 18-year old son Ryan was transported to a hospital in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. "Some of them are waiting to hear if their kids are alive".

"It is sort of every parent's worst nightmare", Henry said.

"It's a frightful accident, my God", Darren Opp, president of the Nipawin Hawks hockey team, told the Globe and Mail.

"It still affects the community", Lowry said.

Garinger said he still didn't know the fate of one of the players living in his home.

A GoFundMe page started by a Humboldt resident has raised over $1 million with the money going to families at the appropriate time. "Hell of a friend and hockey player that lived every day with passion and love".

"2night my heart is in Humboldt", tweeted Anaheim Ducks National Hockey League defenseman Steven Oleksy.

The mayor said he talked on the phone with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who passed along condolences from world leaders. "We know that the coroner and their office needs to do their work and let families know".

D'Andrea has covered hockey in and around Prince Albert for over six years and knows a number of names on the roster who could have been on the bus.

"It's got to rip the heart out of your chest", said Babcock, who grew up in Saskatoon. STARS air ambulance said it sent three helicopters to the scene.

McAvoy said the bus trips are "honestly one of my favourite parts of playing hockey".

Friday's crash is not the first highway accident to kill hockey players in Saskatchewan.

Jets centre Adam Lowry played his junior hockey in Swift Current, a city that is far too familiar with tragedy. Haugan's sister wrote on Twitter.

Funds from all corners of the country and beyond are pouring in for the families of a Saskatchewan junior hockey team following a tragic crash that has left 14 dead.

"From a grieving province, thank you to every one of the first responders and medical professionals for your courageous response under the most hard circumstances imaginable". And I think that's why so many of them are so heartbroken to see the news.

Former NHL player Sheldon Kennedy, who was one of the players on the bus in 1986, also sent a message of support. It's open to North American-born players between the ages of 16 and 20.

Broncos president Kevin Garinger released this statement on the team's website, "Our thoughts and prayers are extended to the families of our staff and athletes as well as to all who have been impacted by this terrible tragedy".
