Uber buys bike-sharing service Jump

JUMP is joining Uber. – JUMP Bikes – Medium

Uber today announced they have acquired Jump, an electric dockless bike-sharing company, who now operate 12,000 dockless bikes in 40 cities, across six countries. In February, Uber added an option in its app that lets users reserve and rent Jump bikes in San Francisco.

The deal illustrates the swirl of investor activity in the increasingly competitive business of bike sharing.

JUMP's electric-assist bikes are better suited to the occasional cyclist dealing with San Francisco's famous undulations than the pedal-power-only bikes that have swarmed across China to the extent that group buying concern Meituan Dianping last week splashed US$2.7 billion to acquire bike-sharing firm Mobike. By moving away from a strictly ride-sharing model, Uber may even eventually capture part of the Chinese market away from prospective competitor Didi Chuxing.

Uber users around the world may soon be able to hire electric bicycles through the app, after the ride-sharing firm bought USA bike-hire firm Jump. "We see the Uber app as moving from just being about auto sharing and car-hailing to really helping the consumer get from A to B int he most affordable, most dependable, most convenient way", Khosrowshahi said.

"The utilization of the bikes has been higher than expected", Khosrowshahi said. The bicycles will be getting ridden more than just six times per day typically, according to Rzepecki. Jump also operates its fleet in Washington D.C. and Sacramento, Calif.

The aim of the deal is to provide Uber users with a choice of ways to get around crowded cities, especially as bike sharing catches on.

Bikeshare investments are the new hot thing in tech, and for Uber, the value here may lie in having vehicles that do not have the "Uber" name on them.

The EU's top court on Tuesday backed the right of member states like France to ban a service by ridesharing firm Uber without notifying Brussels, in a fresh setback to the USA giant.

At the same time, the move into dockless bikes could reenforce skepticism from opponents who say un-docked bikes clutter city streets and sidewalks, and encourage theft and vandalism.

Jump founder Ryan Rzepecki first got the idea for his bike-sharing company while studying for his master's degree in urban planning at Hunter College. Our pilot of JUMP bikes in San Francisco is off to a very strong start, with thousands of trips by riders who always have smiles on their faces as they cruise up hills-and past people riding conventional bikes - I nearly felt guilty riding mine.

"We're excited to begin our next chapter and to play a significant part in the transition of Uber to a multi-modal platform", he said in a statement.
