Over 40 hurt after student charter bus crashes into NY overpass

An overpass on a New York Highway sheared off the top of a moving bus injuring more than two-dozen people

The driver was not reportedly from the area and was not aware commercial vehicles were not allowed to travel on the NY parkway.

Police say the 38 students from various Long Island high schools, along with five chaperones, had just returned from Kennedy Airport and were heading to a shopping mall to meet up with parents.

'I give credit to the Nassau County Police Ambulance Bureau, Emergency Services Unit and the Lakeview Volunteer Fire Department. They set up a mass-casualty treatment triage and probably saved lives. Six teenagers suffered serious injuries and the entire top of the bus was destroyed. It was not clear which schools they were affiliated with, and authorities said the trip was not organized by school officials. Tractor-trailers and buses aren't allowed on the road, which has low overpasses.

"The trip was part of EF Education Tours", Candelaria said.

The driver "obviously wasn't aware of the parkway system" and its restrictions on commercial vehicles, Candelaria said.

Police hadn't determined whether the driver, Troy Gaston, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, would be charged, Candelaria said. The driver is under review.

A sign on the Eagle Avenue overpass along the Southern State Parkway in Hempstead, Long Island, indicates 7-foot, 7-inches of clearance.

The investigation into the collision is ongoing.

Some residents tell News 12 this isn't the first time a tall vehicle has hit an overpass on the highway.

In December, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced a $4.3 million project to install an electronic warning system that detects when oversized vehicles enter parkways.

Published witness accounts said the roof of the bus was pushed down to the top of the seats and the full length of the vehicle went under the bridge.
