Speaker Paul Ryan Will Not Run for Re-Election

House Paul Ryan speaks at a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington U.S

In December of a year ago, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said President Donald Trump had called Ryan and the president made it clear he wouldn't be happy if Ryan quit Congress.

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan has said he will not seek re-election in November.

Buck says Ryan will discuss his decision at a news conference Wednesday.

"This morning Speaker Ryan shared with his colleagues that this will be his past year as a member of the House", Brendan Buck said. It's also being said that after accomplishing his longtime dream of passing tax reform, Ryan is ready to move one.

Ryan's future on Capitol Hill had been a topic of conversation ahead of a hard campaign season, as Republicans try to keep the House majority. Ryan had made tax cuts a centerpiece of his legislative agenda, and Congress delivered on that late past year.

Ryan, who was elected speaker in 2015 to replace outgoing John Boehner, is among a wave of House Republicans who have retired or announced they will not seek re-election in this year's mid-term elections.

A statement released this morning from Democrat Randy Bryce's congressional campaign said: "Paul Ryan made a decision to quit today rather than face Randy Bryce and the voters". Ryan, 48, was the Republican vice-presidential nominee in 2012, running with Mitt Romney in a failed bid against Democrat President Barack Obama.

Ryan and his wife have three children.
