Apple Must Pay $502.6 Million to VirnetX, Federal Jury Rules

VirnetX shares surge as jury says Apple infringed patents: report

Apple's stock has seen little change on the news given that the $502.6 million award is minuscule compared to the company's profits.

A federal jury on Tuesday awarded Internet security company VirnetX hefty damages after Apple was found to have violated VirnetX patents related to secure communication in its FaceTime, iMessage, and VPN On Demand services.

The dispute has bounced between the district court, patent office and Federal Circuit since 2010. The two companies have been battling it out in court over various patent cases for 8 years, the most recent case pertains to Apple's iMessenger and FaceTime technology.

Apple has lost in caught to VirnetX once again. Apple has been targeted by this twice over the last several years. It isn't the first time a ruling in the case has gone against Apple. Even so, there was still a major difference there, Apple and Samsung both use their patents in products that they make and sell, while VirtnetX focuses on court cases to bring in revenue.

Apple's never-ending battle with notorious patent troll VirnetX continues today.

In a statement to Bloomberg, VirnetX CEO Kendall Larsen called the damages amount "fair".

"The Patent Trial and Appeal Board has said the patents are invalid, in cases that are now before the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, "Bloomberg reported". The court ruled in the favor of VirnetX and has ordered Apple to pay more than United States dollars 500 million as compensation to the patent-assertion organization.

The Patent Trial and Appeal Board has ruled the patents invalid, which VirnetX is appealing.
