Iran's Velayati says Israel to meet 'response' over air base: Mayadeen

Due to US sanctions trade was conducted through alternative payment mechanisms of limited scope

Following an air strike on the Syrian Tiyas Military Airbase on Monday, subsequently attributed to the Israeli military, Iran's Ali Akbar Velayati issued several threats targeting Israel.

Since Friday, March 30th, violent protesters in the Gaza Strip have amassed on Israel's border, clashing with Israeli security forces in riots that have left roughly 30 Gazans dead and hundreds more wounded.

SANA reported that the missile attack on the T4 military air base in Homs province resulted in a number of casualties.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif attempted to connect Monday's air strike to recent gains in the Syrian civil war purportedly achieved by brutal dictator Bashar Assad's forces.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the strike on the base a "very risky development".

Unconfirmed reports also suggest the presence of Iranian forces at the base.

The official IRAN daily said Col. Mehdi Dehghan, a member of the Guard's aerospace force, was killed in the attack. The solution he offers is for "America and its allies - the EU, Israel, Saudi Arabia and the Arab states - to drill home to Russian Federation that a permanent Iranian military presence in Syria is unacceptable".

More news: Russian Federation says it will respond firmly to USA sanctions

Israel has previously targeted Iranian units in Syria but did not comment on the latest strike. Both Syria and Russian Federation denied the attack took place.

Despite Trump's earlier warning that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad would pay a "big price" for his military's alleged use of poison, analysts questioned whether USA strikes would influence the course of events on the battlefield and stem the seeming inevitability of a Syrian government victory over its opponents.

Russia, Iran and Syria have accused of mounting the attack, Israel, however Israel has neither confirmed nor denied participation.

In his tweets Sunday, Trump called Assad an "animal" and delivered a rare personal criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin for supporting him.

Earlier, President Donald Trump had promised a "big price to pay" for the suspected chemical attack.

"It seems the USA government is looking for an excuse for military intervention", Iran's foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, said has he arrived in Brazil early on Tuesday, according to state media.

In Block's view, "whatever the debate over the JCPOA - the nuclear agreement signed between Iran, six world powers and the European Union in 2015 - a robust consensus in Congress is needed that Iran's military role in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and elsewhere must be countered".

According to independent monitors, hundreds of thousands of civilians have been killed in the war, mostly by the regime and its powerful allies, and millions have been displaced both inside and outside of Syria.
