A warehouse Sized Asteroid Said Hello To Earth

How a Football Field Size Asteroid Caught Us by Surprise

The asteroid called 2013 US3 included in the list of potential threats to Earth, the maximum closer to the Blue planet on April 29. Designated 2018 GE3, made its closest approach to Earth at around 0641 GMT on April 15 (12:11 am, April 16 in Indian Standard Time) whizzing by at about half the average distance between Earth and the moon, according to NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS). The orbit appears to extend to the inner part of the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. "2018 GE3 was found less than a day before its closest approach", said the report. Some hours later, Spaceweather.com reported that an amateur astronomer Michael Jager of Weibenkirchen Austria has posted the video of the asteroid that was recorded when asteroid fly past through the southern constellation Serpens.

The newfound asteroid was estimated to be 48 to110 meters (157 to 360 feet) in diameter.

The asteroid which flies past by Earth on Sunday was about six times the size of the meteor that was exploded over Russia's Ural Mountains in Chelyabinsk in the month of February during the year 2013. Since 2001, at least two other instances of asteroids coming dangerously close to Earth have occurred and those space rocks were much bigger than 2018 GE3.

Had the object, first observed at the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona on Saturday, moving at a speed of some 66,174 miles per hour (106,497 km/h), hit the Earth, its impact would be hard to imagine.

This particular asteroid was not just larger that the one that struck Tunguska, it was estimated to produced 185 times more energy than the Hiroshima atomic bomb, a report in space.com said.

If asteroid 2018 GE3 had hit Earth, a great portion of the space rock might have disintegrated. "Should the 2018 GE3 have impacted Earth, it would have caused a significant amount of damage, however, it would have been regional, not global damage", a space and weather website reported.
