Israeli troops kill three protesters, injure 600 during 'riots' along Gaza border

Thousands of Gazans attend funeral of Palestinian journalist Ahmed Abu Hussein

The health ministry in Gaza says Israeli forces have shot dead three Palestinians in continuing protests on the border.

Israel's United Nations envoy, Danny Danon, told the security council on Thursday that Hamas in Gaza was responsible for Palestinian casualties and that it was using innocent Palestinian women and children as human shields, while they cowered behind in safety.

Palestine's Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour has lashed out at the ongoing killing of Palestinian demonstrators during Gaza protests, urging the UN Security Council to "take immediate action to ensure the rights of Palestinians are protected", according to Iran's Press TV news agency.

"Troops have used riot dispersal means and have fired in accordance with the rules of engagement", it added.

"Attempts have been made to harm security infrastructure, roll burning tires, hurl rocks and fly kites with flaming objects attached to them".

On the other hand, the Israeli occupation soldiers detained at dawn Saturday one Palestinian in Bait Fajjar, south of Bethlehem, after raiding and searching his family's house.

Gaza Strip was shaken by seven weeks of clashes in the summer of 2014 between Israeli forces and Palestinians.

In line with the total support of the American government for Israel's assault on the protests, the media has either remained silent about yesterday's killings or explicitly defended them.

The Israeli military fighter jets have targeted six military targets belonging to Hamas's naval force in the northern Gaza Strip, said the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

Gaza's Health Ministry said 50 people were wounded earlier in the day, including at least 16 by live fire.

Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, a military spokesman, said the event was unlike anything Israel has seen over the past month.

Earlier Friday, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights urged Israel to refrain from using "excessive force" against demonstrators.

'The terrorists are hiding while allowing, even hoping, for their people to die. He added, "This is evil in its purest form".

Israeli authorities have repeatedly denied accusations of excessive use of force during the protests, ignoring calls for an worldwide investigation into the matter.

May 15 is the date the Palestinians mark as the "Nakba", or "Catastrophe", when hundreds of thousands fled or were driven out of their homes during violence in the 1948-49 war between the newly-created state of Israel and its Arab neighbors. Israel refuses any right of return, fearing that the country would lose its Jewish majority. The increasing desperation of broad layers of Gaza youth is a product of both the unbearable conditions facing the more than 1.9 million Palestinians blockaded in what is the largest open-air prison on earth, and the lack of any viable perspective provided by a supposed "two-state solution".

Israel maintains it has acted legitimately to protect its civilians from militants trying to breach the border. This restriction of movement has been devastating on the Palestinian population, with 80 percent of the Gaza citizens relying on food aid as reported by the World Bank.
