Top Donald Trump aide denies calling president an 'idiot'

White House chief of staff John Kelly denies calling Donald Trump 'an idiot'

Kelly said in a statement he and Trump have "an incredibly candid and strong relationship".

Less than an hour after the NBC report was published, Kelly issued a statement calling the story "total BS". I am committed to the President, his agenda, and our country'.

The report also said General Kelly referred to Mr Trump as "an idiot" multiple times, and that the president was growing exhausted of Mr Kelly's attitude.

"Truly bad people!", Trump tweeted. ABC News reported two days after Porter resigned that Trump was so furious over Kelly's handling of the situation that he spoke with confidantes about possibly replacing Kelly. "We've got to save him from himself", the channel reported Kelly as having said.

Some current and former White House officials expect General Kelly to leave this July, NBC News reports.

"The strong implication being 'if I weren't here we would've entered WWIII or the president would have been impeached, '" a former White House official told reporters.

In that post, he pursued a more aggressive stance on immigration policy and won Mr Trump's praise for a drop in the number of migrants crossing the U.S. border with Mexico.

Four of the officials said they'd personally witnessed Kelly using the disparaging term to describe Trump.

"Several sources interviewed by the publication shared comments that they attributed to Kelly, including "[Trump] doesn't even understand what DACA is. The chief of staff has a long history of racist, ruthless politics: He cracked down people in prison who went on a hunger strike while he was running Guantanamo, he believes that waterboarding "absolutely" works, and has said that a "lack of compromise" led to the Civil War. "He's an idiot", Kelly said in a meeting about the program that protects hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants brought into the country as children, according to two officials in attendance.

Despite being lauded by critics as a "sobering" force in Donald Trump's White House when he was first hired, an MSNBC panel Monday agreed that chief of staff John Kelly's past controversies suggest he was never who media expected him to be.

Trump, who aides said has soured on his second chief of staff, is aware of some though not all of Kelly's comments, according to the current and former officials.
