Donald Trump To Meet With Occupents Of Deadly Southwest Airlines Flight

Wikipedia

The crew of the Southwest Airlines flight that made an emergency landing in Philadelphia will meet with President Trump at the White House on Tuesday.

Trump, in a meeting in the Oval Office, praised the response of pilot Tammie Jo Shults, who steered the plane to safety on April 17 after an engine explosion blew out a window, killing passenger Jennifer Riordan.

Jennifer Riordan was killed on a Southwest Airlines flight after shrapnel from an exploding engine smashed a window at 30,000 feet while flying from LaGuardia Airport in NY and had an emergency landing in Philadelphia on April 17.

A woman, Jennifer Riordan, died after being nearly sucked out of the plane when a window was fractured by debris from an exploding engine. They include firefighter Andrew Needum, ranch worker Tim McGinty, and nurse Peggy Phillips. "We send our prayers to Jennifer's husband and their two lovely young children".

"Captain Shults, I especially want to commend you for your lifesaving actions".

President Trump said they responded with "tremendous bravery". You drew from years of training and safety and you knew how to land that plane.

In a statement released by Southwest on April 18, Shults and Southwest First Officer Darren Ellisor said "our hearts are heavy" and that they felt "we were simply doing our jobs". "On behalf of the entire Crew, we appreciate the outpouring of support from the public and our coworkers as we reflect on one family's profound loss".

Shults' expert handling of the emergency has drawn comparisons to the legendary "Miracle on the Hudson" pilot Chesley Sullenberger, who landed a disabled US Airways airline in the Hudson River in January 2009 after a bird strike.
