Mark Zuckerberg addresses Cambridge Analytica, data privacy at F8 developers conference

Mark Zuckerberg threatened with summons by British lawmakers probing Cambridge Analytica scandal

In a related move, Facebook Tuesday announced an upcoming feature called "Clear History" that will allow users to see which apps and websites send the network information, delete the data from their account, and prevent Facebook from storing it.

It will be available first in English and Spanish, initially trialling in the US.

Zuckerberg said such coordinated operations and large numbers of fake accounts was something the company was "slow to recognise". Last year, Zuckerberg described his strategy for using VR to reshape the way people interact and experience life, much as the company's social network already has. "I took Wyclef Jean to Jupiter and went home with Hodor".

Mr Zuckerberg said Facebook's service would launch "soon", with chief product officer Chris Cox telling a separate audience at the conference to expect more details "over the next few months". Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the company's plan to make the headset six months ago.

The Facebook CEO will kick off F8, the company's annual conference for software developers.

Oculus Go is different from other virtual reality devices that require smartphones or a cord tethered to a personal computer to cast people into artificial worlds or show three-dimensional videos. Though the release date and rollout info for Facebook Dating won't be released until later this year, the fact that it got to this stage without seemingly anyone noting the potential user safety implications is telling.

Zuckerberg was cheerful and even giggly at times during his presentation, a far cry from his stiff testimony two weeks ago in front of Congress.

There were also some online rumblings that the dating feature might be open only to people who list themselves as "single" and not those who are "married" or "in a relationship", ignoring the subset of people who are in non-monogamous relationships. "Your friends aren't going to see your profile, and you're only going to be suggested to people who are not your friends". "So let's say that your friend is testifying in Congress, for example", Zuckerberg said with a laugh.

Officials in the United Kingdom and US have opened inquiries into Facebook and its privacy policies after it was revealed in March that Cambridge Analytica, a British-based political consulting firm, had amassed the personal information of 87 million Facebook users without their permission. Some of my friends actually did this!

He also said that the company was slow to identify the ways Russian Federation had used the platform to interfere in the 2016 elections, but that his team would never be unprepared again.
