Amber Rudd resigns as Home Secretary

May appoints British Pakistani as new home secretary

Asked if Mrs May allowed Ms Rudd "to fall on her sword" to protect herself, she replied: "Amber resigned because of information that she had given to Parliament which proved to be inaccurate".

British Prime Minister Theresa May appointed a new interior minister yesterday after suffering a blow with the resignation of Amber Rudd for having misled lawmakers over deportation targets for illegal immigrants.

The Prime Minister said she believed Rudd had given her evidence to the House of Commons "in good faith" but that she understood her decision to resign and take "responsibility for inadvertently misleading the home affairs select committee".

It came hours after her former deputy, Brandon Lewis, confirmed that Rudd had set an "ambition" for the government to deport more illegal immigrants.

May and Rudd apologised for the treatment of the Windrush generation during the recent Commonwealth summit attended by leaders from Caribbean countries, among others. "There is a whole series of Commonwealth migrants, who, unless the Home Secretary does what it takes, will suffer the same humiliation that the Windrush generation did".

Rudd, who had faced growing pressure over the so-called Windrush scandal, told lawmakers last week that there were no targets for the removal of people deemed to be in the country illegally.

The SNP's home affairs spokeswoman Joanna Cherry said blame for the Windrush scandal "lies firmly at the door of Theresa May and her toxic Tory immigration policies". The day before his appointment, Javid had told The Sunday Telegraph that issue felt "very personal", saying: "I thought, that could be my mum, it could be my dad, it could be my uncle, it could be me".

"The government was warned that the negative outcomes for Commonwealth citizens would be a effect of the hostile environment policy", concluded Abbott. We will do right by the Windrush generation'.

She made a specific reference to overseas doctors, many of them from India, being denied visas to come and work for the state-funded National Health Service (NHS) and termed as "grotesque" the government "wrongly removing" students, many among them from India, over a controversial English language test dating back a few years.

Johnson said he was "really sad" to lose her from the Cabinet.

Rudd, who was lauded for her handling of terror attacks in Britain in 2017, wrote to May: "It is with great regret that I am resigning as home secretary".

For, as is so often the case, Ministers are, yet again, following public opinion and a desire in the country at large to stand by those Caribbean immigrants who made
their home here after the war and who contributed
so much to the diversity
and prosperity of today's Britain before being treated so appallingly.

The latest resignation comes just days before local council elections in Britain, due to be held on May 3, during which the Opposition parties will hope to capitalise on some of the upheaval in government.
