Israeli troops fire shots, tear gas at Gaza protesters, 1100 Palestinians hurt

Israelis fire tear gas, warning shots at Palestinians on Gaza border

Ashraf al-Qedra, spokesman of the health ministry in Gaza, told reporters that six Palestinians were shot and wounded by Israeli soldiers' gunfire at the border east of al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza Strip with Israel.

After advancing toward the border fence, protesters would retreat when the Israeli army fired tear gas.

Since weekly marches began in late March, 39 protesters have been killed and more than 1,700 wounded by army fire.

In a new aerial twist, small Israeli drones faced off against Gaza kites with burning rags attached to them, according to witnesses.

The Israeli military has come in for criticism from overseas over its use of live fire, with United Nations chief Antonio Guterres and the European Union calling for an independent investigation, rejected by Israel.

No Israelis have been hurt in the weeks of protests and the military has faced global criticism for its use of live ammunition. The victims were present at Gaza-Israel border as part of a long-running protest. The Gaza protests have seen thousands gather - in greater numbers on Fridays - to demand access to their families' lost homes or lands, now in Israel.

"If it wasn't for the occupation we would have lived as free as people like in other countries", said Ahmed, 24, at a protest site east of Gaza City.

"In the beginning we protested peacefully", said a kite maker who identified himself only by his nickname, Abu Ayed, fearing Israeli retribution.

Israel said it's defending its sovereign border, including nearby communities, and that soldiers only target instigators.

The Palestinian rallies, known as the "Great March of Return," will last until May 15, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of Nakba Day (Day of Catastrophe), when Israel was created.

It accused Hamas, a militant group sworn to Israel's destruction, of trying to carry out attacks under the guise of the mass protests.

At least 431 Palestinians were injured Friday, Palestinian officials said, as some 7,000 took part in the demonstrations, flew dozens of kites with petrol bombs into Israel, hurled stones at soldiers, and tried to breach the border fence.

Israel has warned that it will prevent such a breach at any cost.
