Terre Haute police officer fatally shot

Terre Haute police officer shot and killed; suspect still barricaded in apartment

A western IN police officer has been fatally shot, and officers have surrounded an apartment complex where they believe the suspect remains at large.

Neither the officer nor the suspect were immediately identified.

No information was immediately available about the male officer who was killed at the Garden Quarter apartment complex.

The officer died after he was taken to Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

They had developed information on a suspect in that killing and were approaching an apartment in The Garden Quarter, an apartment complex along Jessica Drive south of Terre Haute.

State police say the suspect started shooting at the officers from the second floor of an apartment building and the officers returned fire.

The suspect who was also wounded, managed to barricade themselves in the building for several hours. "We are praying for his family, friends, colleagues, and community".

The suspect was injured and medics on the scene were called to treat the man, Watts said.

The dying was the primary within the line of responsibility by an officer with the Terre Haute Police Division since July 11, 2011.

"It is another tragic loss for the Wabash Valley and the Terre Haute Police Department", Indiana State Police spokesman Joe Watts said in announcing the officer's death. At that time, the name of the suspect is expected to be released.

State Police Sgt. Joe Watts Tweeted the officer had succumbed to his injuries. "I would just ask that you keep our officers in our thoughts and prayers". That is when Officer Brent D. Long was killed while serving an arrest warrant with a U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force.
