Tesla's Musk defends comments made during conference call

Tesla’s founder Elon Musk is also behind the SpaceX project to send a spaceship to Mars but he is having trouble getting his electric car business off the ground

"Prior to a planned shutdown in mid-April to further increase production, we produced more than 2,000 Model 3 vehicles for three straight weeks, and we hit 2,270 in the last of those weeks", CEO Elon Musk said in a statement. "HyperChange represented actual investors, so I switched to them". Musk interrupted him to say that boring questions are "not cool" and called for the next question. Sorry. These questions are so dry.

If Elon Musk has any regrets about dissing some pesky stock analysts in a call this week to discuss Tesla's latest earnings, it's not showing up in his Twitter feed.

"I should have answered their questions live".

Finally, Musk promised those betting against Tesla would have regrets.

Tesla shares rebounded Friday, climbing more than 4% in recent trading. The investors and analysts claimed, pointing fingers at Musk, that the loss reduced their faith in Musk's competency as the CEO of the company.

Nord LB analyst Frank Schwope said that Musk's refusal to answer questions or receive criticism was "not very clever" but added that his ability to find new money was still intact. For one, there is concern Tesla won't be able to maintain demand for the Model 3, because of production issues that have stalled deliveries.

Jefferies analyst Philippe Houchois said the underlying business fundamentals were more important in any capital raise, although "management credibility" was also a factor. Not all long shares are in stock-lending programs, and given the high short interest at the moment, that leaves just 6.5 million shares for expanded short positions.

Tesla gained 3.4% to $294.09 on Friday.

Speaking to CNBC about the incident on Thursday, Sacconaghi suggested that Musk's behavior was a "worrisome sign".

In a subsequent tweet, Musk explained: "Reason RBC question about Model 3 demand is absurd is that Tesla has roughly half a million reservations, despite no advertising & no cars in showrooms. They are actually on the *opposite* side of investors", Musk tweeted.

CNBC also reports that Musk chose to take several questions from a 25-year-old retail investor and owner of a YouTube channel, Galileo Russell, which is unusual because questions on earnings calls are traditionally reserved for analysts, professional investors, and sometimes media.
