FBI Probing Possible Banking Fraud by Trump Lawyer Michael Cohen

Questions raised by Giuliani comments on Stormy payment

The comment from Giuliani, the former NY mayor who recently joined Trump's legal team, comes amid an ongoing furor over a string of assertions he has made regarding the 2016 payment to Stormy Daniels, why it was made and how much the president knew about it.

Giuliani made headlines last week when he said that Trump reimbursed his personal attorney, Michael Cohen, for the payment to Daniels to ensure her silence regarding her affair with Trump.

To make more of a splash, the show crammed a cavalcade of stars into the opening sketch: In addition to Baldwin, Ben Stiller played Trump attorney Michael Cohen; Martin Short was Trump's Dr. Bornstein; Scarlett Johansson played Ivanka Trump to Jimmy Fallon's squeaky-voiced Jared Kushner.

The remarks by Giuliani, the former federal prosecutor and mayor of NY, implied that Trump was aware of the payments at the time, contradicting the president's statements to the contrary just last month. Giuliani appeared to walk back several previous comments he'd made to Fox News' Sean Hannity last week, but maintained that Trump's firing of "inferior executive officer" Comey "was clearly within his Article II power" as president. "It's a nuisance payment".

GIULIANI: But here's the - but here's the - well, yes, I mean that - that's one of the possibilities and one of the rumors.

Senior White House adviser Kellyanne Conway said she was not aware of any other possible payoffs. Two separate lines of credit were secured against NY real estate, including a condominium in Trump World Tower owned by Cohen's wife's parents.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, had told her story to multiple journalists over the years, including reporters from Slate and In Touch magazine, before signing the confidentiality agreement and a statement denying the affair.

He said Mr Cohen "made payments for the President or he's conducted business for the President". Yes", Giuliani said. "I'm comfortable with that.

The cameo gave her the opportunity to tell Trump in a roundabout way what it would take to settle her dispute, which is a question many have asked while watching the suit unfold (answer: "a resignation), as well as to provide timely puns like, "I know you don't believe in climate change, but a storm's a-comin' baby".

Cohen no longer represents Trump, Giuliani said, adding that it would "be a conflict right now". "People don't go away for $130,000 with a meritorious claim".

"Michael's lawyers all know that that obviously is not on the table", Giuliani said.

"I've got a client who wants to testify please, he said it yesterday, and Jay Sekulow and I said yesterday, 'I hope we get a chance to tell him the risk that he's taking, ' so he may testify, we may actually work things out with Bob Mueller because working it out directly is good", said Giuliani. What matters, he said, is that the payment was not in violation of any campaign finance rules because it was made for personal reasons. "They didn't cross my desk as campaign manager", she told CNN's "State of the Union". "I mean, what we witnessed by Rudy Giuliani may be one of the worst TV appearances by an attorney on behalf of a client in modern times".
