Late Charge Lifts Aussie Day To PGA Wells Fargo Victory

Golf fans buy tickets for the Wells Fargo Championship Thursday at the Will Call location at Quail Hollow Club

"At any given moment, kids want to ask that question, but it's how they present the question, and he presented it at the right time".

Jason Day had a bunch of different clubs in the bag since his last win, even though that was only three months ago at the Farmers Insurance Open.

There's no prize money that comes with being world No. 1, no trophy or FedExCup points. He failed to make birdie in the final round of a PGA Tour event for only the second time in his career, and the first since the Cadillac Championship at Doral in 2014.

Mickelson had his lowest round of the season.

But that relative indifference has changed in recent years. A few weeks after that, Woods had the first of four back surgeries.

"The biggest thing is, you're playing mental games with yourself", he said. "It drives him to do that", Swatton said.

Former world number one Jason Day has a burning ambition to get back to the top of the rankings and he made a huge leap with a two-stroke victory at the Wells Fargo Championship in North Carolina on Sunday.

"I felt like I went 10 rounds out there just fighting against myself", Day said.

Although he would win by two strokes, it wasn't exactly a dominant performance. Unfortunately, Day incredibly played those tough last three holes in two-under to post the winning score at 12-under. 13 and 14, the latter dropping him into a tie for the lead with Aaron Wise. "I thought I legitimately had a chance to win".

But it all came down to the Green Mile and Day was clutch when he needed to be.

"To have the opportunity to come out here and enjoy it, have a great week".

After squandering a three-shot lead on the back nine, Day rolled in a 20-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole and then effectively won the tournament when his tee shot on the 230-yard 17th hole crashed into the flagstick and settled 3 feet away.

"This is probably one of the best wins I've ever had, just because of how hard everything was today", he added.

Tiger Woods returns: A two-time victor of this event, Tiger will tee it up for the first time since 2015 at TPC Sawgrass.

"There was a little bit more moisture on the greens so you could give them a little more pace and not have them run six or eight feet by", said Mickelson, who said he never knew a round of 7 under was possible when he teed off. It's an awesome golf course.
