Two workers were rescued in an unconscious condition, while bodies of two miners were recovered Saturday night.

At least twenty-three miners were killed and nine others were rescued after two coalmine collapsed in two separate incidents near Marwar and Sooranj area of Quetta district the other day.

The roof caved in following the blast triggered by the accumulation of methane gas, killing 16 miners, Deputy Commissioner Farrukh Atique said. Their bodies were later recovered after hours-long rescue operation.

"We are trying our best to recover bodies but it will take time as a lot of them are buried very deep", Shahwani said.

It was not immediately clear if that was caused by the explosion. Two labourers died in a landslide on Saturday in another mine in Surrang coalfields.

According to local media, about 25 people were in the mine when the explosion occurred.

The demonstration culminated with the adoption of a resolution by the participants, calling on Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar to take suo motu notice of the mine accidents.

"The collapse apparently took place because of a gas explosion and the miners working at that time were trapped inside".

The mines are mostly owned by state-run Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation, which leases many of them to private contractors.
