Attorney General Jeff Sessions to visit San Diego border Monday

Sessions Congress may need to 'take action' on encryption

If you smuggle illegal aliens across our border, we will prosecute you. "If you are smuggling a child, then we will prosecute you and that child may be separated from you as required by law".

But by referring immigrants caught illegally crossing for criminal charges, the move means that if an adult comes across the border with children, they will be separated from those children as they await their criminal proceedings. Children in turn will be sent to the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Refugee Resettlement, which works with shelters or relatives in the U.S.

The country "cannot take everyone on Earth who is in a hard situation", Sessions said, before referring to a Gallup poll that indicated 150 million people around the world want to immigrate to the United States. "We need legality and integrity in our immigration system", he continued.

Monday's announcement came about a week after hundreds of Central American migrants traveled to the San Ysidro, Calif., port of entry seeking asylum following a monthlong caravan through Mexico.

Sessions' visit follows a March visit by President Donald Trump to Otay Mesa to survey border wall prototypes.

"I have no doubt that many of those crossing our border illegally are leaving behind hard situations", Sessions said Monday.

"It's obvious that we can not take everyone who wants to come here without also hurting the interests of the citizens we are sworn to serve and protect".

Sessions also announced the Justice Department's intention to criminally prosecute every immigrant who illegally crosses the border, as opposed to simply busing them back over the border.

Justice Department officials said the two will discuss "immigration enforcement actions of the Trump Administration".
