Google Sets New Election Ads Rules To Counter Foreign Propaganda

Chicago Mayor Daley Announces Initiative With Google

And the company will release a library through which users can search for specific election ads and see who bought them.

Google is already investing in keeping its own platforms secure and working with campaigns, elections officials, journalists, and others to help ensure the security of the online platforms that they depend on. This will disclose who is buying election-related ads across Google platforms and how much money is being spent.

The news, announced Friday in a blog post by Google Senior Vice President Kent Walker, takes effect later this year - in advance of November's midterm elections.

Google announced a policy change Friday that says advertisers must now prove they are USA citizens or lawful residents in order to buy political ads.

"Our work on elections goes far beyond improving policies for advertising".

Ad buyers can do so with a government-issued ID and the more vague "other key information".

Policy changes being rolled out come as online ad "duopoly" Google and Facebook strive to avoid being used to spread misleading or divisive ads aimed at voters.

"To help people better understand who is paying for an election ad, we're also requiring that ads incorporate a clear disclosure of who is paying for it".

Walker said Google is also working with the National Cyber Security Alliance and Digital Democracy Project at the Belfer Center at Harvard Kennedy School to fund security training programs for elected officials, campaigns, and staff members.

While Facebook may have their issues with political ads well in hand, Google has been somewhat silent on the issue.

Google also supports the "Disinfo Lab" at the Kennedy School's Shorenstein Center.

Much has already been said and done about the reported misinformation campaign launched by the Russians during the USA presidential election as part of an operation to influence the democratic process.

Facebook isn't the only one with too much of your data.

In recent months, Facebook and Twitter have also unveiled new updates to verify and increase the transparency of political ads on their websites.
