Italy's Elia Viviani wins the second stage after a thrilling final sprint

'Rohan was within two seconds of taking the jersey'

Quick-Step rider Elia Viviani grabbed his second grand tour win at the Giro d'Italia on Saturday as Australian Rohan Dennis took the overall lead after the second stage.

Italy's Elia Viviani, 29, won the second stage of the race in less than four hours bursting through from well behind to emerge from the back wheel of Irishman Sam Bennett and surge to victory.

Having already worn the yellow jersey of Tour de France leader and the red jersey of Vuelta a Espana leader, today he hoped to add the iconic pink jersey to his collection.

He went from the far left to the far right, nearly barging Viviani into the barriers.

Sprints are short, challenging parts of the race that give riders who win them strategic advantages such as time bonuses or the coveted colored jerseys denoting their prowess in climbing, or other aspects.

"The pressure was off after yesterday's win, but the final straight was good for me", Viviani said.

"We won so we re not looking to create tensions amongst our competitors but there was a moment where we touched, either I had to lean on him or I would have to break".

Enrico Barbin, of Bardiani-CSF, was the first to the summit in the solitary climb in the second stage to clinch the blue jersey in Tel Aviv. Who knew there wouldn't be any roadside spectators in the middle of a desert?

A time trial specialist, today was a big day for Rohan. "We did around 2,000 metres of up and down and at some point the group was really stressful about the wind".

But having been left out of the Sky team to ride the Giro a year ago, Viviani wasn't going to let lightning strike twice.

Italian Jakub Mareczko was second with Bennet taking third.

Belgium's Victor Campenaerts (LottoNL-Jumbo), who was tied with Dennis on Friday's time trial, was one of many riders to be caught out in the finale and dropped out of the top 10 after conceding 31 seconds. They were a little bit bumpy.

"I was really nervous this morning, I tried to overcome a bit this emotion but it's not easy".

"It was maximum effort to move up as much as possible through the roundabouts".

After Monday's rest day as the race packs up and travels from Israel back to Europe, the 101st edition of the Giro continues on Tuesday with the hilly 198km stage from Catania to Caltagirone in Sicily. It was the closing chapter of a historic three days, during which cycling captured the Israeli public's imagination.

Sunday saw a three-man breakaway go clear nearly right from the start with Canadian Guillaume Boivin making it into the escape group for the second day in a row.
