US Prepares to Relocate Its Embassy to Jerusalem

The embassy move comes after Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital a year ago. "These include religious and business leaders, journalists, academics, and government representatives from the United States".

Other members include U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin, assistant and senior advisor to the president Jared Kushner, assistant and advisor to the president Ivanka Trump, and Jason Greenblatt, assistant to the president and special representative for global negotiations. Other world powers have not done so, sidestepping one of the thorniest disputes between Israel and the Palestinians, who want their own state with East Jerusalem as the capital.

In Jerusalem, there were at least three road sign that says the U.S. Embassy in three languages: English, Hebrew and Arabic.

Jerusalem witnessed fixing of road signs on Monday ahead of May 14, the day when USA consulate building will be officially repurposed as embassy.

Earlier this week, Amnesty International UK also condemned the launch of the race right next to East Jerusalem al-Quds where Palestinians regularly face house demolitions, illegal settlement building and restrictions of movement.

Still, local residents are excited about the new move.

Since the creation of the Jewish state it has not recognised Jerusalem as its capital and considers that the final status of the city must be negotiated with the Palestinians.

Earlier, US Embassy road signs were erected in Jerusalem on Monday a week before Washington was due to relocate its mission, a move that has infuriated the Arab and Muslim worlds. The Palestinian leadership and most of the worldwide community consider East Jerusalem as occupied territory and the future capital of a sovereign Palestinian state.

In March, Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales said his country would relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on May 16, two days after the USA move.

If Trump attended the ceremony, it might have amplified protests that are expected to break out around the opening.
