Armenia Pashinyan became the new Prime Minister of the country

Armenian Protest Leader Gets Second Chance At Prime Minister In Parliamentary Vote

The Armenian National Assembly has voted on the single candidature for the prime minister's post, the leader of the Velvet Revolution, chair of the Civil Contract Party, MP Nikol Pashinyan.

At a special session on May 8, the parliament voted 59-42 to elect Pashinyan, just more than a month after he launched a protest movement that inspired the country's dissatisfied but hitherto cynical citizens out into the streets to oust longtime leader Serzh Sargsyan. Deputies from the ruling party voted for the opposition leader of street protests.

Pashinian was the only candidate in Tuesday's parliamentary vote, the second to choose premier after he received only 45 of the necessary 53 votes last week.

The Republican Party, which has a majority of parliament seats, later underlined the difficulty by declaring it's now in opposition.

In the event of the parliament's rejection of the action plan, the elected PM resigns and new elections of PM take place.

"I am 95 percent sure that your candidate will be elected as prime minister tomorrow", Pashinyan told the cheering crowd.

Pashinyan reiterated his intention not to alter Armenia's current foreign policy course, including the country's membership in Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union or keeping Russian military bases on Armenia's territory. Bagdasaryan said today that they were voting for Pashinyan in spite of the fact that they were not reassured.

Pashinian, who will turn 43 on June 1, received a hero's welcome when he headed to Republic Square, the main venue of the protests, later in the afternoon.

Pending fresh elections "Pashinyan must manoeuvre between the will of the people and the parliamentary ruling party that he does not belong to and which can not begin supporting him", he said. He said his ministers will be chosen "as a result of discussions" with his allies and other political groups.

Karapetyan was appointed prime minister in September 2016, after the resignation of Hovik Abrahamyan.

He has publicly fallen out with other opposition leaders such as the former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan. He was released from jail in 2011 under a prisoner amnesty scheme and elected to parliament the next year.

After the plebiscite, thousands of opposition supporters rallied against alleged mass violations at polling stations.
