China exports beat expectations despite USA trade spat

Top Chinese economic adviser to visit US next week for trade talks

Mr. Trump is seeking to cut the chronic US trade deficit and gain concessions over policies that foreign companies say force them to share technology with Chinese partners in order to gain market access.

Exports jumped 12.9% last month from a year earlier, after falling 2.7% in March, the General Administration of Customs said Tuesday.

"China's top economic adviser, the vice premier [Liu He], will be coming here next week to continue the discussions with the president's economic team", White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters.

U.S. officials led by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin visited Beijing last week for negotiations with the Chinese government, but the meeting appeared to yield little except an agreement that the two powers would continue to communicate despite "big differences" between them. President Donald Trump tweeted last week that "it is hard for China in that they have become very spoiled with US trade wins!" "The President has a great relationship with (Chinese) President Xi (Jinping), and we are working on something that we think will be great for everybody", Sanders said.

The country's surplus with the US expanded to $22.19B - compared with a surplus of $15.43B in March.

Trump directed Trade Representative Lighthizer in early April to look at the potential of imposing $50 billion in tariffs on Chinese imports.

"The US and China asked one another to make sweeping concessions but failed to bridge divisions, raising the chances that each government will slap tariffs on tens of billions of dollars of the other country's exports", the daily reported. That compared with 39.17 million tonnes in April a year ago.

China's trade surplus with the USA swelled to $22.2 billion, up from $15.4 the previous month, as its exports to the US grew at double digit rates.

China's Commerce Ministry said the two sides had agreed to establish a mechanism to try to resolve their dispute, though differences remained, Chinese state media reported. Trump doubled down, threatening $100 billion in tariffs on Chinese imports to the U.S.
