North Korea's Kim tells China's Xi he's committed to denuclearisation

Kim talks denuclearisation with Xi in second China visit

Chinese state media have quoted North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as saying he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping to inform him about sweeping changes in the region.

Kim told Xi the denuclearisation of the peninsula was North Korea's "constant and clear position", and that dialogue between North Korea and the United States could build mutual trust. He met Kim on this last trip but said he did not know exactly who he would meet this time.

North Korean state news media on Tuesday criticized Japan for continuing to support tough sanctions against the North, with Rodong Sinmun, the country's official newspaper, calling it "tantamount to throwing cold water over easing tensions on the Korean Peninsula".

Kim and Xi spoke about a wide range of issues.

After news of the meeting between the two leaders was released, Trump announced that he would be speaking to "my friend" Xi on Tuesday. Unsurprisingly, a dynastic authoritarian who refers to himself as "Supreme Leader" is not particularly known for his willingness to take a joke. The plane believed to be carrying Kim took off at about 3.20pm local time.

Xi was reportedly in the northeastern city of Dalian to attend a ceremony marking the test launch of China's first entirely domestically-produced aircraft carrier.

President Trump has agreed to meet with Kim at a now undisclosed location to discuss recently implemented U.S sanctions, and the discourse between the two world leaders have been troubling.

The second summit between Kim and Xi in the northern Chinese city of Dalian on Monday and Tuesday appeared to highlight efforts by the allies to restore ties that have been chilled by the North's nuclear and missile development.

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha tried to dismiss the concerns, saying it was "diplomatically unthinkable" to delay the summit given both leaders' "strong" will to hold it. "We will think it will be a great success". "This meeting is one that carries the will of President Trump and State Affairs Commission Chairman Kim Jong Un", she said, using Kim's formal title.

This is their second meeting after their first secret one in Beijing in late March. It said the U.S. was inconsistent in its approach two cases of nuclear proliferation in the world - one in Iran and other in North Korea and China feels its role could play big if the US's unpredictability fails to serve the real cause.

China has been keen to show it has an indispensable role in seeking a lasting solution to tension over North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons, concerned that its interests may be ignored, especially as North Korea and the United States establish contacts.

Suzanne Scholte, who chairs the North Korea Freedom Coalition, separately told The Christian Post in April that unless the USA focuses on getting North Korea to agree on improving its human rights record, then any negotiations will be fruitless.
