Qualcomm to launch new smartwatch chip this fall- here's how it'll change Wear OS

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), announced that it has worked with Google to implement its next generation operating system, Android P, on select Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ mobile platforms.

I remember my Moto 360 2nd-gen was surprisingly stable, though not ideal, when the Android Wear 1.5 update came out.

Last year Google's big change to the flop OS was making it more of a standalone platform - so it could work much better with an iPhone. Beyond those aspects, it's tough to gauge whether or not Wear OS has enough gas in the tank to really make a significant impact in the smartwatch industry - one that's largely dominated by the Apple Watch. That was when the chip-maker released the Snapdragon Wear 2100 system. In order to start interacting with your watch again you'll have to press the physical side button - a quick tap to view the time, or a long press to fully disable this mode and restore regular operation.

The new chip, which doesn't have a name yet, will apparently arrive in the fall and be joined by a new smartwatch to show it off. Qualcomm's senior director of wearables, Pankaj Kedia, said this first watch will be followed by others from Qualcomm's existing partners before the end of the year, in an interview with Wareable. Alongside this, the up and coming processor will convey unusual move up to the battery life and will bolster all the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi standards.

The second Developer Preview of the Wear OS is also based on Android P and comes with support for Actions on Google and more power-related enhancements including a new battery saver mode.

The chips promise better battery life and will enable smaller watch designs, a company executive said.

While there is no official update at the moment, Google has released a Developer Preview which is now only available for the Huawei Watch 2. Qualcomm's not saying how much size reduction the new platform will allow, but on a watch, just a few millimeters can make a difference.

The Snapdragon Wear 2100 was built on a 28nm manufacturing process in 2016, but the website says Qualcomm is now working on something more "front-line". The new chipset will be available in multiple variations with all having Bluetooth and Wi-Fi while fitness-oriented chips will also include Global Positioning System.

In regards to this latter category, Google notes that fitness brands are not happy with the current black and white ambient display as it does not look good.
