Facebook bans foreign advertisers during Ireland abortion vote

The role of online ads in elections is under scrutiny following revelations that Russian groups bought ads on leading services such as Google and Facebook to try to influence the 2016 US presidential campaign

Together For Yes, however, argued that the banning of ads on Google will ensure a level playing field between both sides of the referendum. "[It's] scandalous, and it is an attempt to rig the election".

Twitter has also moved to ban referendum ads for the remainder of the campaign, while Facebook had announced earlier this week that it was blocking all ads that come from advertisers outside of Ireland.

"Following our update around election integrity efforts globally, we have chose to pause all ads related to the Irish referendum on the Eighth Amendment", said the company.

It means ads related to this month's abortion referendum will disappear from Google and YouTube over the next day.

The spokesperson said enforcement of the policy - which will cover referendum adverts that appear alongside Google search results and on its video sharing platform YouTube - will begin in the next 24 hours, with the pause remaining in effect through the referendum, with the vote due to take place on May 25.

Voters are being asked whether they want to repeal the country's Eighth Amendment, a clause in the constitution that protects "the right to life of the unborn." According to TheJournal.ie, this amendment will allow repealing (removing) Article 40.3.3 (known as the Eighth Amendment) and replacing it with this line: 'Provision may be made by law for the regulation of termination of pregnancies'.

The company announced last week it would be rolling out a verification process for election adverts in the United States and pledged to look at a wider range of elections globally.

"Online was the only platform available to the No campaign to speak to voters directly".

"That platform is now being undermined in order to prevent the public from hearing the message from one side".

There are now just over two weeks left to the referendum on May 25th.

'This is alarming when you consider a growing number of people exclusively rely on social media to consume news and shape their decision making process when it comes to elections and referenda'.

But The National Review's Michael Brendan Dougherty suggests the tech giants are bowing to pressure from abortion advocates in Ireland.
