Scientist, 104, who 'regrets' his long life dies as Swiss euthanasia clinic

Making the most of it David Goodall tours the Basel University Botanical Gardens with three of his grandchildren and two of their partners the day before his planned assisted suicide

Though Goodall was not terminally ill, he had seen his eyesight and mobility deteriorate considerably in recent years and said that his life stopped being enjoyable "five or 10 years ago".

Goodall's last meal was fish and chips, Reuters reports, but the scientist said he hasn't been able to truly enjoy his meals like he used to.

And in his final minutes, a German-sung version of the last movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Ode to Joy, was played in line with his wishes.

Around midday, an IV was placed into Goodall's arm, allowing him to turn a wheel to let the lethal drugs to flow into his bloodstream, according to Exit International, an Australian nonprofit that advocates for the legalisation of euthanasia.

The scientist had traveled from Perth, Australia (where it is against the law to end one's life) to Switzerland to carry out the procedure.

CNN notes that the 104-year-old scientist had advocated for the legalization of assisted suicide in Australia and that his home state of Western Australia is now debating whether to introduce the policy.

Prof. Goodall was cleared by two Swiss doctors, including a psychiatrist who said he was of sound mind, to proceed with the "Swiss option".

Assisted suicide has been legal in Switzerland since the 1940s if performed by someone with no direct interest in the death.

According to right-to-die group Exit International, Australian biologist David Goodall was declared dead at 12.30pm on Thursday.

At a press conference in Basel on Wednesday, he told reporters that he was happy to have the chance to end his life in Switzerland but would have preferred to do so back home.

He requested that no funeral or remembrance service be held and that his body be donated to medicine or his ashes sprinkled locally.

Goodall said he had no doubts over his chosen course of action and was grateful for the opportunity to "come to an end gracefully".

"I'm content to leave them undone", he added.

"A peaceful, dignified death is the entitlement of all who want it", it said on its website on Monday.

At 102, he was told to permanently vacate his office at Edith Cowan University in Perth over fears for his health and wellbeing.

University officials later reversed their decision.

"One wants to, at my age, even rather less than my age... to be free to choose death when the death is at an appropriate time", Goodall said during his final public appearance.
