White House Condemns Iranian Attacks on Israeli Targets

Russian President Vladimir Putin right meets with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Kremlin in Moscow

Addressing the annual Herzliya Conference, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman spoke about the Iranian attack Wednesday night, when 20 rockets were fired by Iran, from Syria, against Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel's air strikes were "appropriate" because Iran had "crossed a red line". There were no Israeli casualties. Syria's state news agency SANA quoted a Syrian military official as saying Israeli missiles hit air defense positions, radar stations and a weapons warehouse, but claiming most incoming rockets were intercepted.

Iran has vowed to retaliate for repeated Israeli airstrikes targeting its forces in Syria.

It was nearly certainly in retaliation for that episode - and other Israeli attacks in April - that Iran's Quds force, an elite unit of the Revolutionary Guards, sent rocket fire in Israel's direction on Wednesday night.

"The Israeli army carried out an extensive attack against Iranian targets in Syria".

Syria's Foreign Ministry said Thursday that the Israeli attacks will only increase tension in the region and pose a "serious" threat to regional and worldwide peace, according to the state news agency SANA.

"We are in a protracted campaign, and our policy is clear: Iran can not be allowed to entrench itself militarily in Syria", he said.

Israel "views this Iranian attack very severely", Conricus told reporters. According to the observatory, at least fifteen people, of whom eight were Iranian, were killed.

"We don't want an escalation, but won't let anyone attack us or build an infrastructure to attack us in the future", Lieberman said. One was reportedly shot down by a US-made Saudi counter-missile battery just outside the capital Riyadh.

The United States also calls on all nations to make clear that the Iranian regime's actions pose a severe threat to global peace and stability. He added that "ground assets were also used to strike into Syria".

Where once the United States would have been the brake on spikes in Syrian violence, there is a real possibility President Donald Trump's withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal is greasing the wheels towards a wider regional war.

It is the worst direct violence in years between arch-rivals Iran and Israel, raising fears that a wider conflict could erupt in the region.

Putin - as many global diplomats have warned could happen - finds himself, absent a working peace plan in Syria, riding a tiger.

In response, Israel launched a missile strike of its own against dozens of Iranian positions in Syria. "We have seen a demonstration of the IDF's intelligence and airpower capabilities", he added about the retaliatory strikes, according to the Post. On April 30, Israel was said to have struck government outposts in northern Syria, killing more than a dozen pro-government fighters, many of them Iranians.

The two sides have been on a collision course for months.
