US Embassy moves Twitter account from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem

Gazans rally near Israel border in blockade-busting campaign

Israel says the demonstrations are orchestrated by Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza. He has raised the possibility of a mass border breach, comparing protesters to a "starving tiger", unpredictable and full of pent-up anger.

Israel has been slammed for its use of live fire with the UN, EU and the Israeli opposition accusing the military of employing disproportionate force against those who do not pose a threat.

During protests in April, Israeli forces shot at least six journalists in one day. Among the wounded was a 16-year-old boy who was shot in the head and was listed as being in critical condition. Rights groups say the use of potentially lethal force against unarmed protesters is unlawful.

The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry said that one person was killed and another 146 injured, The Times of Israel reported.

Days after President Donald Trump pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal, tensions in the Middle East have spiked sharply, raising concerns that the pending US Embassy move to Jerusalem will further ratchet up conflict with unpredictable outcomes for the Middle East, according to a CNN report.

The Elders, a group of former high-ranking global leaders that includes former U.N. General Secretary Kofi Annan, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, and Nobel Peace Laureate Desmond Tutu, released a statement on Thursday demanding Israel respect worldwide law and stop further Gaza protest killings.

On Monday, the United States is set to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and on Tuesday Palestinians will commemorate what they call the "Nakba" - Arabic for catastrophe - marking the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians during the war surrounding the creation of Israel.

Mr. Trump has promised to broker a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, assigning the task to top advisers led by Jared Kushner, his son-in-law.

Addressing protesters at a camp in central Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, leader of the Islamist movement Hamas, vowed Friday to "turn the Nakba that ended Palestine to a Nakba that ends the Zionist enterprise".

Several flaming kites were flown over the fence by demonstrators, sparking blazes in Israeli territory.

The military said protesters were "violent, burning tyres and hurling rocks" and that it "will not allow any harm to the security infrastructure or security fence and will continue standing by its mission to defend and ensure the security of the citizens of Israel and Israeli sovereignty, as necessary".

Sinwar was freed in a prisoner swap with Israel in 2011 and was elected as the movement's Gaza chief in 2017.
