35 confirmed cases of salmonella reported stemming from Hyde. Co. egg recall

Six in Pennsylvania sick from shell egg salmonella outbreak

A salmonella outbreak that led to the multi-state recall in April of more than 200 million eggs has worsened in recent weeks, with the number of people sickened by the bacteria rising to nearly three dozen.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 35 illnesses have been reported so far.

Additional illnesses continue to be confirmed in an outbreak of Salmonella traced to eggs from Rose Acre Farms.

Most of the illnesses were reported in eight states along the East Coast; New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida reported cases. Illnesses have been reported in all of the states, the majority of which were from NY and Virginia, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

Rose Acre Farms in IN voluntarily recalled 206,749,248 eggs due to potential contamination with Salmonella Braenderup, the Food and Drug Administration said in a statement. They were distributed from a farm in Hyde County, N.C., and sold by retailers under different brand names: Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak, Crystal Farms, Food Lion, Glenview, Great Value, Nelms, Publix, Sunshine Farms and Sunups.

On the packaging of the recalled eggs, consumers can find the plant No. P-1065, and a Julian date range of 011 through date of 102. In a statement to the Indianapolis Star, chief operating officer Tony Wesner said: "We're sorry for any concerns we may have caused consumers because some of our policies fell short of FDA standards, and we vow to do better in the future". In total 35 cases have been reported across nine states with 11 people hospitalized.

Rose Acre Farms sued, and a few years later a federal judge ruled that the government had overstepped its boundaries and had to compensate the company for income lost as a result of regulations.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can be found on the inside of contaminated eggs and on eggshells, too. "It's very hard to know that so they have to do a large recall".

Rose Acre Farms said, "We apologize to anyone who may have been sickened or who has a family member or friend who may have taken ill because of our eggs".

The symptoms, which include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, take about 12-72 hours after exposure to take effect.

Of the 25 people for whom complete information is available, 88 percent, or 22 people, reported eating shell eggs before becoming sick.
