Indonesian policemen patrol outside a church following a suicide bomb in Surabaya

Islamic State claimed responsibility for Sunday's attacks in a statement carried by its Aamaq news agency.

National police chief Tito Karnavian said they belonged to an IS-inspired network, Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD).

Karnavian said the family had returned to Indonesia from Syria, where until recently the Islamic State group controlled significant territory. No details were given about the family's alleged involvement in that conflict. At least 41 people were injured in the bombings, which Indonesia's president condemned as "barbaric".

How did the family stage the attack?

Police have not identified the attackers. He identified the mother as Puji Kuswati.

The wife and daughters went inside and detonated a bomb, Karnavian said.

Officers patrol the site of one of three suicide bomb attacks on Christian churches in the city of Surabaya.

At least seven people plus the six family members, who included girls ages 9 and 12, died in the attacks in Surabaya, according to police. It was their attack that came first, at around 07:30 local time (00:30 GMT). "Do not believe in misleading information that (the bomb) exploded in five locations or any others", the police spokesman added.

A security guard told the Associated Press news agency that the woman had arrived at the Diponegoro church carrying two bags, and forced her way inside ignoring the guards.

"Together we invoke the God of peace to cease these violent actions, and in the heart of all, find space not for hatred and violence but for reconciliation and fraternity", he said.

Meanwhile, East Java Police spokesman Sr.

It is not yet known if this bombing was connected to the other attacks.

The bombings at the Christian churches occurred in the capital of Indonesia's East Java Province shortly after a series of attacks on police took place elsewhere in Indonesia following Islamist rioting at a detention center at the headquarters of elite police unit the Mobile Brigade in Depok, near Jakarta.

This appears to be the worst attack linked to IS in Indonesia.

In 2016, ISIS said it carried out a suicide bombing and shooting near a Starbucks in Jakarta.

It was the first major attack in Jakarta since Jemaah Islamiyah's 2009 simultaneous attacks on the J.W. Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels, which left seven people dead.
