Department of Foreign Affairs warns Aussie tourists of fresh Bali terror attacks

Three families behind ISIS-inspired bombings in Indonesia's Surabaya

Frans Barung Mangera told reporter here on Tuesday, the bombers were members of the Tri Murtiono family with his wife, and three sons including a child of 8 years that miraculously survived. No fatality among the police officers but four were injured.

Inspector general Machfud Arifin told CNN Indonesia that the suicide attacks were carried out using a motorbike at St Mary's church and a vehicle at another.

The coordinated bombings on Sunday, followed on Monday by a suicide attack by another family on police headquarters in Surabaya, have horrified Indonesians who typically see their Muslim-majority country as diverse and tolerant.

Based on a CCTV recording, the suicide bombers, identified as one family consisting of five people on two motorcycles, tried to get into the station, but the bomb exploded as the police officers guarding the gate stopped them.

However, the return of Indonesian fighters and their families from ISIS-controlled areas of Iraq and Syria presented a new challenge to the country's law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

The attacks are believed to have been instigated by radical Indonesian group, the Jemaah Ansharut Daulah network, which has pledged allegiance to Islamic State.

"For the kids, I think this is craziness", said Taufik Andrie, who runs an Indonesian institute that helps rehabilitate former militants ready to rejoin society.

In all, 26 people - including 13 militants and their children - died since Sunday. Jemaah Islamiyah, the al-Qaida affiliated network responsible for the Bali attacks, was obliterated by a sustained crackdown on militants by Indonesia's counterterrorism police with USA and Australian support.

Using women and children in militant attacks has always been a tactic deployed in other countries - Nigerian terror group Boko Haram often uses children as suicide bombers.

At least 26 people were killed and dozens more injured in the multiple suicide bombings, the deadliest terrorist strike in Indonesia in more than a decade. Another bomb exploded on Sunday evening in Sidoarjo, East Java, which killed three suspected terrorists. The mother, with her two daughters, attacked the Christian Church of Diponegoro, he said.

Authorities said they received a report about WF's comment and then conducted an investigation leading to her arrest in the Banda Raya subdistrict of Banda Aceh on Monday night. All six members of the family were killed.

Karnavian said the father drove a bomb-laden auto into the city's Pentecostal church.
