Gap apologises for 'incorrect' Chinese map on T-shirts

Gap 'terribly sorry' over T-shirt China map without Taiwan

Gap is the latest of several companies that have apologized for perceived slights to China's sovereignty.

U.S. fashion retailer Gap became the latest giant corporation to apologise to China for selling a T-shirt with an "incorrect" map that did not feature Taiwan and other territories it claims. "The related products were pulled off the shelves in the Chinese market and destroyed earlier".

U.S. clothing retailer Gap has apologised to China over a T-shirt with a map showing the mainland but omitting Taiwan, becoming the latest foreign firm to run afoul of Beijing's policy on the self-ruling island.

Gap immediately responded to the criticism on the site saying it "respects China's sovereignty and territorial integrity" and that it had just learned that one of its T-shirts in some overseas markets failed to reflect the "correct" map of China.

The offending T-shirt showed a map of China without including Taiwan, the self-ruled island that Beijing says is an integral part of the country.

The clothing brand, based in the US, is the most recent global business to be in trouble with the government of China over that country's territorial issues.

Most recently, the Chinese Civil Aviation Administration ordered a number of air carriers, including USA airlines, to identify Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau as Chinese regions on their websites. "China's efforts to export its censorship and political correctness to Americans and the rest of the free world will be resisted".

Delta Air Lines based in the US and Zara the European based clothing retailer were on the hot seat as well over issues of a similar nature on their e-commerce sites in China.

Chinese authorities in January blocked Marriott's (MAR) websites and apps for a week after the company listed Tibet, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as separate countries in emails and apps. Mercedes-Benz said sorry for quoting the Dalai Lama on social media. But Gap's China headquarters in Shanghai said the T-shirt had not been released in China.

The photos were taken at a Gap shop in Canada's Niagara region, China's state-owned Global Times said.
