Macron calls friend Trump, angry over his Iran nuclear move

Javad Zarif Says Russia Would Continue to Support JCPOA Despite US Pullout

In Beijing on Sunday, Zarif said he was hopeful of forging a "clear future design" for the deal to save it from collapse, after US President Donald Trump withdrew from it on Tuesday.

In one of a series of meetings, foreign ministers from Britain, France and Germany - signatories of the 2015 deal to stop Iran developing nuclear weapons - were to hold talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, amid concerns that the sanctions will also damage European business interests.

Iran has threatened to resume "industrial scale" uranium enrichment "without any restrictions" if it does not get guarantees that the trade ties which have been established with Europe since the deal was signed will be maintained.

Beijing has expressed regret over Trump's decision to withdraw from the 2015 agreement and says it remains committed to the pact.

Meanwhile, Lavrov said that Russian Federation and Europe had a duty to "jointly defend their legal interests" in terms of the Iran deal.

Khamenei said on Wednesday that Iran does not trust France, Germany and the United Kingdom to provide the "real guarantees" needed for Iran to remain in the agreement. Boeing, which signed a contract to supply new planes to Iran's aging aircraft fleet, stands to lose around $20 billion now that the U.S. is reimposing sanctions.

Tehran has warned it is preparing to resume "industrial-scale" uranium enrichment "without any restrictions" unless Europe can provide solid guarantees that it can maintain the economic benefits it gained from the nuclear agreement despite the USA reimposing sanctions.

Under the deal signed in Vienna with six world powers - China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, the US, Germany, and the European Union - Iran scaled back its uranium enrichment programme and promised not to pursue nuclear weapons in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.

Le Drian expressed France's "determination to fight" so that the US decisions don't hurt those companies that have invested in Iran.

But he added: "If the nuclear deal is to continue, the interests of the people of Iran must be assured".

"We'll outline what we might be able to do to keep trade flowing, but we'll tell them (Iran) that they should be under no illusion about our ability to influence American policy and to influence the economic situation." the diplomat said.

Zarif is scheduled to talk with Russian Federation on Monday about the nuclear deal.

It comes after Iranian President Hassan Rohani confirmed Tehran would remain in the nuclear accord provided that the nation's interests were protected.

European Union leaders aim to show a united front on preserving the Iran deal when they meet for a pre-summit dinner in Sofia on Wednesday, officials said.

"So far we have had very positive signals from signatories of the deal. but what is important is for Europeans to find a way to protect their investors from USA penalties (when they invest in Iran)", a senior Iranian diplomat said.
