Deadly blast in Southern California medical building investigated as intentional

Aliso Viejo blast: Mystery explosion kills woman in Orange County California

The explosion blew siding off the walls, exposing insulation and framing.

Investigators believe the Tuesday blast, which happened in Orange County, may have come from a package, according to the Associated Press.

But police have not confirmed this and they say no device was found.

The explosion, in a normally tranquil South Orange County city, prompted the evacuation of nearby businesses and a school filled with children, officials said.

The fire at the building at 11 Mareblu - an outpatient medical clinic - was quickly doused following the roughly 1:10 p.m. explosion, but hazardous materials officials and bomb squad investigators were at the scene trying to assess the situation and ensure there was no further danger, Orange County Fire Authority Capt.

In an evening briefing, Orange County and federal officials said no cause had been definitively determined or ruled out, whether a gas leak or an intentional act. She and the three injured were likely in close proximity to the explosion, Sawyer said.

Authorities have said that there is no lingering threat to the public, and there didn't initially appear to be any threats made before the blast or signs of terrorism.

Mary McWilliams told the Orange County Register that she arrived for an appointment to find smoke surrounding the area and vehicle alarms going off.

Little children holding hands and others being pushed in rolling cribs were led by firefighters to a Target parking lot to be united with parents. McWilliams says one woman had skin peeling on her arm.

The Tuesday afternoon blast on the first floor of an Aliso Viejo building in Orange County shattered windows and forced children in a nearby daycare center to be evacuated. The other woman was burned and her head was bleeding.

He explained that authorities were being extra cautious because they "don't see explosions in commercial buildings" often.

Of the three people who were injured, Ms. Braun said, two suffered "significant" injuries while the third complained of smoke inhalation.
