Justice Department reportedly opens probe into Cambridge Analytica

Facebook is suspending about 200 apps it believes may have misused data

After receiving the letter, the Committee insisted that Facebook's answers did not fully answer the questions with sufficient detail or data evidence, and that it would be writing to the company again to address these significant gaps. In order to avoid a second Cambridge Analytica data scandal, it has also investigated thousands of other apps that may have misused people's personal data.

He said that the committee plans to send Facebook more questions in the coming days and invited Zuckerberg to testify by video.

"The investigation process is in full swing", said an online statement from Facebook product partnerships vice-president Ime Archibong. According to New Scientist, data like people's names, ages, genders, and relationship status - and even some status updates - of 3 million people was stored insecurely on a website that wasn't protected properly.

Facebook has now suspended the myPersonality app (and around 200 other similar apps) in its efforts to investigate apps that may have violated its data privacy policies.

It added that "Cambridge Analytica is a data-driven marketing agency and does not manipulate political views".

The Senate Judiciary committee holds a hearing on the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Facebook said that it recognised "the seriousness of these issues" and provided written answers to 39 questions posed by the MPs.

The social media giant said in a blog post Monday that the suspensions resulted from its investigation into all apps that had access to large amounts of information before Facebook changed its platform policies in 2014.

Sam Lester, the consumer privacy counsel at the Electronic Privacy Information Center, or EPIC, says it's a good effort, but it's too late. They mentioned that the committee found Schroepfer's responses to questions lacking and asked Zuckerberg to appear or the Facebook CEO will face the consequences.

There were a couple of new insights, such as detail on the extent of Facebook data gathering across the net. Here both cases mount up to being peas in the pod; both tests were initiated in the University of Cambridge and both of them had Aleksandr Kogan as a common researcher.

You can imagine what the biz will be saying about the MPs' response to today's 40-page reply.
