NA committee summons NAB chairman over Nawaz 'money laundering' gaffe

The petition alleged Sharif of maligning Pakistan and its national security departments

The Al Azizia Steel Mills reference is among three filed against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family by the NAB a year ago on the Supreme Court's directives.

Sharif, in the Dawn interview, obliquely criticized the military by denouncing "parallel governments".

The National Assembly's Standing Committee on Law and Justice on Tuesday summoned the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Javed Iqbal to appear before it today [Wednesday] in connection with a NAB's press release which said it will investigate Sharif's alleged money laundering.

"The same policy existed during the tenures of Pakistan Peoples Party, General Musharraf and even earlier", he emphasized. "Why can't we complete the trial?" questioned Sharif, referring to the legal battle over those accused of involvement in the 26/11 terror attacks. He said those wishing to go for the formation of a truth and reconciliation commission may do so but must keep in view the national interest.

The prime minister while addressing in the NA asked the house to constitute a committee in this regard.

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, on Saturday, ruffled more than a few feathers when he openly acknowledged that militant organisations operative in Pakistan, crossed the border to "kill" people in Mumbai, in an apparent reference to the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai. He further said Nawaz speaking Modi's language against Pakistan state simply to protect his ill-gotten Rs 300 billion stashed in his sons companies abroad.Mir Jafar was the commander in Siraj- ud -Daulah's army and he colluded with the East India Company to defeat the Nawab of Bengal in the Battle of Plassey in 1757.

The prime minister said a person who made the Country an atomic power was being labeled as a traitor.

He said, "What's wrong with my statement?"

He said, "I reject the NSC's May 14 statement as it is based on misperception..."

On Sunday, the military called an emergency meeting of the National Security Council which reviewed Mr. Sharif's remarks, and said in a statement that "it was very unfortunate that the opinion arising out of either misconceptions or grievances, was presented in disregard of concrete facts and realities".

The parliamentary panel headed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MNA Chaudhry Mohammad Ashraf has called the NAB chief at 2:30 pm today.

Mian Nawaz Sharif remained Prime Minister of the country for three times and therefore, it is not expected that a seasoned politician like him would make off-the-cough remarks on a highly sensitive issue involving relations with our eastern neighbour and also reputation and prestige of the country.
