Nepal's Kami Rita Sherpa, 48, broke his own record becoming the only mountaineer to climb Mount Everest 22 times.

Ang Kami Sherpa's 22nd ascent to the summit created a new record for the most visits to the peak of Everest, Reuters reported.

Nepali mountain guides - known as Sherpa - make the first trek through the icefall each year, installing ropes and ladders and carrying gear before the first climbers begin traveling through the icefall on acclimatizing runs in April and May.

The other record-setter, 44-year-old Lhakpa Sherpa, set a women's record when she reached the summit for a ninth time.

His record of 21 summits was shared by Nepali climbers Apa Sherpa and Phurba Tashi Sherpa, both of whom have already announced retirement.

Before leaving for Lukla, the gateway to Mt. Everest, late last month, the father-of-two told reporters in Kathmandu that he had no plans to stop climbing the mountain. He has also climbed numerous region's other high peaks, including K-2, Cho-Oyu, Manaslu and Lhotse.

Everest oxygen failure accidents avoided

Rajeev Shrestha of the Seven Summit Adventure agency in Kathmandu said he received a message from the base camp about the successful climb.

Sherpa is a single mom to three kids and lives in Hartford, Connecticut where she works as a dishwasher at the local Whole Foods.

"The risks are higher when 99 percent of climbers are going up as tourists", said Reinhold Messner, an Italian climber who was the first to ascend Mount Everest without supplementary oxygen.

Shrestha said a total of 94 climbers reached the summit on Wednesday because of good weather conditions.

Foreigners must pay $11,000 for a permit but cut-price climbing outfits skimping on basic safety requirements have flourished in recent years, luring amateurs to the challenge. According to the Himalayan Database, a record of expeditions in the Himalayas since 1903, out of 8,306 Everest summits so far, 5,280 have happened from Nepal and 3,026 from Tibet.
