Destination Hyderabad for Congress and JDS MLAs

A jubilant BS Yeddyurappa who was sworn in as Karnataka CM on Thursday

The Congress won 78 seats and the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) 37. "We are confident of proving our majority", Yeddyurappa told reporters here. When the apex court hears the matter again, he will have to produce the two letters dated May 15 and 16 he has written to Governor Vajubhai Vala to stake his claim for government formation.

Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was the biggest victor in the Karnataka state election but has fallen short of a majority, sparking a scramble for power between the party and its arch rival Congress.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Yeddyurappa, had sought time till Monday for the floor test but the bench ordered it for Saturday.

The Bharatiya Janata Party gained Karnataka after a series of twists and turns and a rare pre-dawn court intervention, setting the stage for behind-the-scenes political maneuvering to prove its majority. By extending the BJP's rule to south India, outside the Hindu nationalist party's traditional support bases in northern and western India, gives them much needed momentum for 2019 federal polls.

As the newly elected Chief Minister of Karnataka B.S. Yeddyurappa has 15-day to prove his majority on the floor of the assembly, the Congress and JD-S have been alleging that the BJP is trying to "poach" their MLAs.

The court said it wanted to examine the contents of the two letters, which formed the basis for the governor to invite Mr Yeddyurappa to form the government.

Meanwhile, Congress in alliance with the JD (S) is holding protests against Yeddyurappa's swearing-in as CM of Karnataka, after the Supreme Court refused to stay his swearing-in.

He also said that the BJP leader had requested the governor to invite the party to form government and had also said that they would provide a "stable government" and they have the "support of others". BJP President Amit Shah said that the people have rejected the negative politics of the Congress.

One thousand farmers from the state will also be allowed each year to travel to countries like Israel and China to study the best practices in agriculture under the "Chief Minister's Fellowship for Agriculture", the party had said prior to the election. The BJP's bluff that it will form the Govt., even without the numbers, has been called out by the court. "Stopped legally, they will now try money and muscle, to steal the mandate", he said.

With the BJP winning 104 seats in the May 12 Assembly election held in 222 segments, it fell eight short of the 112 halfway mark to win a simple majority.

When the court wanted to know whether staking a claim to form the government with only 104 MLAs would not result in horse-trading, the attorney-general, Mr Venugopal, argued that since the elected candidates had not taken the oath, they were not subject to the anti-defection law.
