Harvey Weinstein's alleged victims speak out, now 'have real hope for justice'

Harvey Weinstein Turns Himself in to Police to Face Sex Crime Charge in NYC

NY police say charges relate to allegations made by two women in an sex abuse probe involving the movie producer.

Mr Weinstein was taken to court in handcuffs, months after he was toppled from Hollywood's highest ranks by scores of women accusing him of misconduct.

"For so long he had his own private system -- fancy lawyers who paid to silence women, private investigators and spies. I thank the fearless survivors who have come forward, and my Office's prosecutors who have worked tirelessly on this investigation", said Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr.in a statement.

He turned himself in at a police precinct in New York City's Tribeca neighborhood in Manhattan early Friday morning, carrying books including "Something Wonderful: Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway Revolution".

After having his mugshots and fingerprints taken, he was escorted out in handcuffs and driven to court in the back of a smart SUV.

After surrendering to NY police Friday morning, a handcuffed Weinstein entered a Manhattan courthouse where he gave up his passport and agreed to wear an ankle monitor, Variety magazine reports.

He has surrendered his passport and been fitted with a monitoring device.

Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein was charged Friday with counts of felony rape and committing a criminal sex act, stemming from cases involving two women, prosecutors said.

NY police have previously confirmed an active Weinstein investigation regarding Evans, who was an aspiring actress at the time, and a credible rape allegation after "Boardwalk Empire" actress Paz de la Huerta accused the former producer of raping her twice at her NY apartment in late 2010.

Dozens of women continued to speak out, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Kate Beckinsale, Cara Delevingne, Salma Hayek and Lupita N'yongo, who brought attention to the conspiracy of silence surrounding Weinstein.

Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi said, "The defendant is charged with two violent felonies. for two separate forcible sexual assaults against two women", and noted that the charges were the result of "months of investigation".

"It's a very significant moment, it's a concrete slap in the face of abuse of power", she said. "But I have a visceral need for him to have handcuffs on him".

The #MeToo movement has seen people around the world come forward with cases of sexual mistreatment, leading to the downfall of powerful men across industries, including Oscar victor Kevin Spacey.

Attacking the credibility of accusers through tough cross-examination is a common defence strategy in rape and sexual assault cases, which often boil down to "he said, she said", according to NY lawyer Lisa Linsky. He did not respond when a woman shouted: "Why are you smiling, Harvey?"

Weinstein has maintained his innocence and claimed that all of his sexual encounters have been consensual, and previously claimed that McGowan demanded a hefty settlement to keep her allegations quiet.

"There was a part of me that was terribly naive", Georgina Chapman, his estranged wife and mother of two, told Vogue magazine recently. "They were you know put through the wringer and I can't help but think of those women right now".

Weinstein's spokesman Juda Engelmayer and Weinstein's lawyer Benjamin Brafman both declined to comment. His past clients include former International Monetary Fund boss Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who ultimately escaped criminal prosecution for alleged sexual assault in 2011.

These are the first criminal charges against Weinstein, who has also been the subject of several civil suits.

McGowan further said she doesn't "ever want to see him again" and that she doesn't want to forgive him.
