Rare Nipah virus claims fourth family member in India

Nipah Virus That Killed 12 In Kerala May Not Be Linked To Bats 10 Points

Animal Husbandry department and Forest officials deposit a bat into a container after catching it inside a well at Changaroth in Kozhikode in the Indian state of Kerala on May 21, 2018.

"We hope that proper steps are taken to ensure that the fourth outbreak doesn't happen in India", he added.

"Health staff are visiting individual households giving them specific instructions including about eating fruits from outside and other precautions", Mr U.V. Jose, the senior-most official in Kozhikode, told the AFP news agency.

The deaths in Kerala is the third instance in India's history of a Nipah virus outbreak, the first two times being in West Bengal's Siliguri in 2001 and Nadia in 2007.

Doctors N. Abhilash of the District Hospital (mobile number 9961730233) and Aneesh K.C. of the General Hospital, Thalassery, (9447804603) were appointed nodal officers to deal with Nipah virus infection treatment arrangements. Of the 13 confirmed cases, 11 people have died so far.

This is the fourth death in Moosa's family.

There is no vaccination for the virus which induces flu-like symptoms that lead to an agonising encephalitis and coma. She is not quarantined in a private hospital in Mangaluru and samples have been sent to the diagnostic centre in Pune. However, they said that people should avoid travelling to the four northern districts of Kerala - Kozhikode, Malappuram, Waynad and Kannur - to be "extra cautious". The natural host of the virus are fruit bats of the Pteropodidae Family, Pteropus genus.

Health officials investigating the outbreak in Kerala, where the first death happened on Friday, have traced it to a well infested with bats from which the victims drew water.

Kerala is on high alert over the infection and two control rooms have been opened in Kozhikode.

Johny Abraham George, a member of the Kerala Government's Tourism Advisory Committee, and CMD of Intersight Tours & Travels, said the state's tourism industry has been facing cancellations over the past five-six days.

There is now no vaccine or treatment to tackle Nipah, which has a mortality rate of around 70 percent.

The public health team constituted by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) has given guidelines to the hospitals for proper risk assessment and management of the Nipah Virus infection.

Nipah has killed more than 260 people in Malaysia, Bangladesh and India in outbreaks since 1998.
