North and South Korean leaders meet again at border

Kim Jong-un and South Korea's Moon Jae In exchange hugs as Seoul commuters watch a train station TV

"The two leaders exchanged their opinions candidly to implement the April 27 Panmunjom Declaration and to have a successful North Korea-U.S. summit", Moon's chief press secretary Yoon Young-chan was quoted as saying, adding that Moon would announce the results of the discussions Sunday at 10 a.m.

Saturday's meeting is only the fourth time serving leaders of the two Koreas, who remain technically at war, have ever met.

His tweet Sunday afternoon, which offered praise for the longtime USA adversary, was the latest signal that his concerns about the North's stance toward the summit had been allayed.

The summit, set for June 12, was jeopardized when, on May 11, the US and South Korea started a two-week annual air combat regional exercise, viewed by Pyongyang as a threat to its security. The two signed the three-page document at their first meeting in April, stating that "South and North Korea confirmed the common goal of realizing, through complete denuclearization, a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula", officials said Saturday.

South Korea's Moon will announce the outcome of his meeting with Kim on Sunday morning.

Kim had an unscheduled meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in wherein they discussed ways to revive the summit.

In response to President Trump's tweet, South Korea's presidential spokesman said, "We are cautiously optimistic that hope is still alive for US-North Korea dialogue".

North Korea issued a statement Friday saying it is still "willing to give the USA time and opportunities" to reconsider talks "at any time, at any format".

Trump said on Friday that Washington was having "productive talks" with Pyongyang about reinstating the June 12 meeting, just a day after cancelling it.

Analysts say Kim's diplomatic outreach in recent months after a flurry of nuclear and missile tests in 2017 indicates he is eager for sanctions relief to build his economy and the global legitimacy the summit with Trump would provide.

Trump's back-and-forth over his summit plans with Kim has exposed the fragility of Seoul as an intermediary. "We're talking to them right now".

Earlier on Friday, speaking to reporters outside the White House in Washington, the U.S. president indicated that the summit could still be salvaged, saying: "We're gonna see what happens".

Trump on Friday night said the historic June summit with Kim could go ahead following talks between the two countries.

The pair also reportedly discussed Kim's potential meeting with USA president Donald Trump next month.

Pelosi said the meeting "takes preparation, this takes knowledge, this takes judgment, and clearly it takes preparation, which the president didn't make". Choe Son Hui, vice-minister of foreign affairs, called Pence "stupid" and a "political dummy", according to an English-language statement from KCNA.
