Solo Star Wars film underwhelms at box office

Most Fans Forgot Boba Fett Would Be Star Wars’ First Lead of Color & That’s a Problem

The opening for the super-expensive, problem plagued Solo is a major disappointment given that it's part of a franchise whose previous three offerings -The Force Awakens, Rogue One and The Last Jedi- all opened north of $150 million in North America alone.

The story overseas is just as bad, too - Solo rolled out everywhere but Japan over the weekend, at it did bombed pretty much everywhere, bringing in just $65 million TOTAL overseas, including a lowly, miserable $10.1 million in China. Solo opened in 54 global markets day-and-date with North America and the best it could come up with was an underwhelming $65 million. The budget soared past $250 million. We already had two blockbusters in the form of Avengers Infinity War and Deadpool 2, both impressing well at the box office and earning big bucks.

"Now what should have been either a victory lap after three-straight $1 billion-plus hits or an acceptable mulligan is going to only add to the "Egad, Star Wars is doomed" drumbeat", Mendelson said. If you're eager to learn how Han Solo met Chewie and became the charming smuggler we all know and love, Solo: A Star Wars Story is now in theaters. After debuting with $125 million last weekend, the R-rated Ryan Reynolds sequel dropped 66 percent to second place with $42.7 million and an estimated $53.5 million four-day haul.

Spoilers for Solo: A Star Wars Story coming up...

Fans were skeptical of Ehrenreich and uncertain about the dismissal of Lord and Miller (the popular filmmaking duo behind "21 Jump Street" and "The Lego Movie").

It is a huge total for any franchise film, but expectations for Star Wars releases are a world apart.

For comparison, Rogue One opened to $155.1 million in 2016, and The Last Jedi grabbed $220 million in its opening weekend in 2017.

Lucasfilm has at least nine more Star Wars films in the works. Solo went after the same demographics as those films, and Deadpool 2 in particular probably drew ticket buyers away from Solo.

While some have mentioned that the "Solo" results were a sign of "Star Wars fatigue" among moviegoers, Dergarabegian argued that the franchise "will be fine".

Some analysts said it was unfair to expect every Star Wars movie to be a juggernaut, especially now that pent-up demand has worn off.
