Russian Federation enters diplomatic dance with North Korea over nuclear weapons

South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un leave after their summit at the truce village of Panmunjom North Korea in this handout

"Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's official visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea will take place on May 31", the foreign ministry said in a statement on Wednesday. A top North Korean official is in the USA and met Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for dinner Wednesday, the highest-level talks between the two countries on American soil in 18 years.

The US has been urged to get accustomed to Asian culture to conduct successful denuclearisation talks with the hermit country by Hitoshi Tanaka, a former Japanese deputy foreign affairs minister.

Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, was meeting with Kim Jong-un in Pyonyang today as Mike Pompeo, the US Secretary of State, sat down for talks in NY with Mr Kim's right hand man in an attempt to revive a cancelled summit between the US and North Korean leaders in Singapore next month.

Washington wants North Korea to quickly give up all its nuclear weapons in a verifiable way in return for sanctions and economic relief. The monitoring is part of efforts to maintain pressure on Pyongyang to denuclearize.

The idea, which Tokyo officials declined to confirm, was reported by major local media as preparations appear back on track for an unprecedented summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Japan's Overseas Ministry says a Japanese navy surveillance plane has noticed a suspected Chinese language-flagged ship apparently transferring gas to a North Korean tanker on the open seas.

Pompeo talks with Kim Yong Chol - the most critical of three tracks of negotiations now taking place between the two governments in the USA, in the heavily fortified Korean Demilitarized Zone, and in Singapore - are aimed at determining whether a meeting between Trump and Kim Jong Un, originally scheduled for June 12 but later cancelled by Trump, can be restored. North Korea suggested that Trump made this decision based on Pyongyang's unwillingness to unilaterally denuclearize, as the DPRK has continuously stressed that it was not interested in unilateral demands from the United States on denuclearization and would negotiate with Trump only if he is seeking to improve bilateral relations.

Abe will meet Trump on June 7 to discuss the talks and stress the importance of the abduction issue for Tokyo.
