U.S. general says some Taliban interested in peace

Seven attackers killed as Afghan forces stave off major terror bid

The area around the Afghan Interior Ministry was rocked by several loud explosions and gunfire on Wednesday, in what appeared to be the latest in a series of attacks in Kabul.

A spokesman for the ministry, Najib Danesh, said eight suicide bombers were involved in the attack, which began with a auto bombing outside the compound.

Danish said that based on initial information one police officer was killed and five others injured.

In Logar Province, just to the south of Kabul, insurgents mounted an early morning attack on Wednesday against the First District Police Headquarters in the provincial seat of Pul-i-Alam, using a suicide vehicle bomb followed by three gunmen, according to Afghan police officials.

On the same day, at least three Afghan police officers were killed after a group of suicide bombers launched an attack on a police station in the eastern province of Logar.

Three attackers, wearing military uniforms, detonated explosives while the others were shot by government troops, officials said.

The Islamic State group's Afghanistan affiliate claimed responsibility for the attack via its Aamaq news agency.

Violence has sharply increased in recent weeks since the Taliban, which leads the insurgency against the Afghan government and us -led troops, announced its annual spring offensive.

Al Jazeera's Jennifer Glasse, reporting from Kabul, said it was a complex attack as fighters attempted to enter the heavily fortified ministry.

Separately, the US military said Wednesday that more than 50 senior Taliban commanders were killed when an artillery rocket system struck a meeting in the Musa Qala district of Helmand province in southern Afghanistan on May 24. In January, a Taliban attacker drove an explosives-laden ambulance into the heart of the capital, killing more than 100 people and wounding as many as 235.

The attack on a meeting of commanders in the district of Musa Qala in Helmand, one of the heartlands of the Taliban insurgency, was a significant blow to the insurgents, said Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell, spokesman for US forces in Afghanistan.

Police also said they had found a auto stuffed with explosives and guns at Kabul's worldwide airport near the interior ministry on Wednesday. No one immediately claimed the attack.

Mohammad Salim Roodi says the attack took place in Girishk district when the police tried to stop a suspicious vehicle outside the governor's compound.
