Wildwood mayor says woman arrested on beach 'by far the aggressor'

Police in Wildwood have released body cam footage following a controversial beach arrest that was caught on video over Memorial Day Weekend.

The newly released video shows officers approach Weinman at a Wildwood beach, question the 20-year-old and a friend about underage drinking and make them take a breathalyzer test.

One officer is heard to say, "You're about to get dropped", before the physical altercation occurs. "I didn't disrespect you". In seconds, both are in the sand in a violent struggle. "Matthew, they're choking me".

"Look I don't care who you are and what you are, the worst people (to try to subdue) are women", he said.

The situation escalates as Weinman refuses to give the officer her last name. She told officers the bottles belonged to her aunt.

"This matter is still under investigation, however, in an effort to insure transparency with the public we serve, it was imperative that this video be released as soon as feasibly possible", the statement said.

"She tried kicking at us, so I slammed her on the ground", the officer later tells his supervisor, after the woman has been tackled, handcuffed and shoved into the back of a police auto.

A bystander posted video online showing a Wildwood police officer punching Emily Weinman in the head during the Saturday arrest.

Who would have thought an underage beach drinking sweep could turn so messy?

Weinman was on probation stemming from a 2014 arrest on charges of burglary.

On Tuesday, Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano called Weinman the aggressor.

An officer tells her she has one last chance to provide her identification. She kicked him and then I hit her a couple times.

"It appears to me like he was trying to use a pressure point strike to be able to bend her arm, but the (internal affairs unit) hasn't done the interview yet so we will find out from the officers themselves", Regalbuto said.

Now that seen the footage has been released, the attorney for Emily Weinman says it's clear the officers used excessive force, while the mayor of Wildwood believes his officers acted appropriately in what became an intense situation. "The police did their job", said Troiano, who added he's a former bouncer and doorman. Did she deserve to get hit?

Troiano told NJ.com that Weinman "refused to comply" and police were doing their job.

The officers involved in Weinman's arrest have been reassigned to administrative duties pending the outcome of a "full and thorough" investigation, police said.

A court date was set for June 6, though Dicht said it will probably be rescheduled for an unknown date.
